You’re a good pen, Charlie Brown

One of the most interesting aspects of collecting writing instruments is discovering models that aren’t in catalogs or advertisements. Too often the rarer uncatalogued finds get discussed as if they were one-offs or prototypes. Any company making a physical product is going to make prototypes. They will want to see what the end product would look like, what difficulties they are going to run into when they make it, and if the cost to make it makes sense for the price point they have in mind.

Real prototypes are often marked up by the people in the company’s model shop. Date it was made, version numbers, and other tracking information sometimes are marked on the instrument itself so there is no doubt what it represents. Many of them will not look like perfect, finished product. A more common reason for uncatalogued pens and pencils is they represent special orders, market tests, and between catalog production runs.

The pattern on this engine turned Wahl-Eversharp pen and pencil set is a combination of the Dart and Colonial designs. Colonial is a repeating pattern of straight lines around the cap and barrel. Dart is a repeating pattern of panels of straight lines with a small curve out that create a repeating arrowhead effect on the panels around the cap and barrel.

This pattern uses the Colonial design as a background and a variation of the Dart design, a continuous single row of curves in the Colonial straight lines that make a repeating zig zag pattern around the cap and barrel. Matthew Greenberger, who has a pen and pencil set calls the design “Charlie Brown” after Charles Schulz’ Peanuts comic strip character, drawn wearing a yellow shirt with a black zigzag around the middle.

I’ve only seen this particular set, a medium size fountain pen with matching Eversharp pencil. The cap is stamped WAHL PEN over GOLD FILLED MADE IN U. S. A. and the clip is stamped WAHL at the top. It has a number 2 gold nib stamped WAHL over 2 over 14K. The pencil has EVERSHARP over GOLD FILLED MADE IN U. S. A. stamped at the top of the barrel. These markings suggest the set was made c. 1924-1927, but without any documentation, it’s a guess.

Engine turned Wahl fountain pens were made from 1921 to 1929 and certain designs are highly sought after by collectors. Unusual, rare and uncatalogued designs will command premium prices when offered for sale and, like this uncatalogued example, would be prized in any collection.
