This is another shot not used in the Winter 2006 Pennant, “Collecting Japanese Pens” by Stan Klemanowicz. According to the article, the pen was made by Yotsubishi (four diamonds), a company from Osaka that made decorated pens, but sourced nibs and hardware from other pen companies. The four diamond logo can be seen on the top of the clip and on the cap band. This pen is an c1955 example of raden shell inlay on a red urushi lacquer pen cap and barrel.

This is another prototype shot. This one is the Classic Pens LR6 Galaxy Prototype. Andy Lambrou wanted to show the pen with the parts Paul Rossi used for the inlays on the cap and barrel and he thought they would show well on the silver reflective surface I have. We like the way the reflections work in this shot. The metal inlays are sterling silver and gold wire pieces. There are two versions of this shot, each one features a different planet on the barrel.

With Tsugaru, the lacquer mixture of lacquer and paints is made up of multi-layers of different paints with an even surface. As the surface is polished, a “spotted” pattern appears, the individual spots being made up of two or three different colors, positioned around one another, for example dark brown surrounded by yellow then by gold color. The painting of several layers, drying in between each painting layer, and hand polishing is labor intensive and takes a very long time to complete. The cost is higher as the number of layers increases but this process gives a rich and quality design. The long polishing process is undertaken by a group of Tsugaru artists, as such Tsugaru Maki-E are not signed by individual artist.
