Elysee Edition Number 2 Limited Edition 1994. Thought we would take some new pictures of one of our favorite pens, the gorgeous Elysee Edition Number 2 Limited Edition, released in 1994. We will be updating our article on the pen shortly with the Elysee released three Cloisonné Limited Edition pen sets in 1993 and 1994. Each pen was a commissioned work of an artist, and was intended for an extended series called Vernissage. The base pen was the Elysee Parthenon, Elysee's top pen. This one is Edition Number 2, by artist Karl Diesner. The artist prefers to work in bright colors and with geometric shapes. The design is an ordered theme of pure and dark blue green lacquer elements offset by wide platinum plate lines that form zigzag pattern down the length of the pen. The edition included 6,000 fountain pens that retailed for $425. There was also a matching capped rollerball pen, twist action ballpoint pen and twist action pencil. The nib is platinum plated 18 karat gold.

Sheaffer WASP Clipper Brown Lahn c1937 with a surprise feature. This is an example of what you can find when you buy the proverbial bag of pens. This is a Sheaffer WASP (W. A. Sheaffer Pen) Clipper in Brown Lahn made probably c1937, based on a 1937 advertisement we have that calls this version of the pen "new." Sheaffer changed the Clipper design in 1938, so it's possible this pen was made only one year. Now why would we show a less than perfect example of this pen, especially one with lots of plating loss? Take a close look at the nib. This Clipper has a gold number 3 stub nib! Although not hallmarked, Sheaffer advertised that the WASP nibs were solid gold, probably 12 karat. The amazing material is called Brown Lahn, and according to Richard Binder's profile of the Sheaffer WASP Clipper pens, the material is patented by the Celluloid Corporation for a material that is a laminated celluloid with a decorative threads effect. The pens came in three of the Lahn colors, Brown, Green and Silver. They sold for $1.95-$3.95 depending on size.

Sheaffer Balance Statesman Rose Glow c1936-1938. This is another example of what you can find in an antique store. Lots of wear and tear on the gold plated trim, but a great user pen in one of the more sought after colors. This well used Sheaffer Balance Statesman is in the striped Rose Glow finish, which was used on this pen c1936 to 1938. The lever-fill Statesman with the Visulated section sold for $10.00 and the matching pencil sold for $4.00. Rose Glow was used on a lot of defferent Sheaffer pens from 1936 to 1938, and still available on the Junior in 1939.

The first model in the line was a large black plastic pen, 5 5/8 inches long capped, with gold plated trim and a large two-tone 18 karat gold nib. Waterman made the Etoile pen specifically for the Italian market with 1000 numbered copies. Interestingly for a pen made by a French company aimed at Italian buyers, the pen was given the name "etoile" is the French word for "star". The pen barrel and cap are engraved in a Fougere guilloche pattern, with the cap top, end cap, and section in plain sterling silver. The large 18 karat gold nib has the Waterman globe and "Ideal" marks and is decorated in rhodium plate.

The Harlequin is a much more cheeky checkerboard design. The Harlequin is a more difficult pen to find and appears to have been made over a shorter period.

Mabie Todd Swan Eternal 46 c1920s. This is a first generation New York Mabie Todd Swan Eternal, size 46, the second largest. ETN and 46 are stamped on the barrel end. There are six sizes of the first generation US made Mabie Todd Swan Eternals, from largest to smallest: 48, 46, 44, 54, and 54 ringtop and 54 slim ringtop. Parker True Blue c1928-1929. This is the first version of the Parker True Blue, a new slender blue and white swirled Permanite pen called the "Three Fifty" in Parker advertisements, because the price was $3.50. The color of this flat top pen, number 208, was called "Modernistic Blue" in the 1929 catalog. The pen is 5 1/4 inches long with the cap on. The matching pencil, number 701 sold for $3.00. There was a ringtop pen and pencil available.

Parker True Blue c1928-1929. This is the first version of the Parker True Blue, a new slender blue and white swirled Permanite pen called the "Three Fifty" in Parker advertisements, because the price was $3.50. The color of this flat top pen, number 208, was called "Modernistic Blue" in the 1929 catalog. The pen is 5 1/4 inches long with the cap on. The matching pencil, number 701 sold for $3.00. There was a ringtop pen and pencil available.

Pens, because of the rubber sacs and ink have a bad habit of changing color over the years since they were made. Pencils, if not exposed to harsh conditions, tend to hold their color much better. This True Blue is about as correct color as we have seen. It's the Number 201 pen (the 1931 catalog does not call them juniors), shorter than the standard slim size 208. The ringtop pen was number 202. All pens sold for $3.50 and matching pencils were $3.25. This button fill pen is 4 9/16 inches long with the cap on. Parker called them True Blue in the 1930 catalog and in 1930 advertisements.

Parker Parkette Deluxe Green 1937. The Parker Parkette was the low price lever-fill entry to the Parker line that still had a lot of interesting features. The deep cut fluted cap and barrel is attractive and a step up from a mere faceted one. In spite of its obvious plating loss, this pen still has the sticker on the cap top. Both the nib and the barrel have 1937 date codes. The pen came in standard and slender versions for the same price. This Deluxe standard model 395 in green features a stainless steel nib with gold plating on the front and sold for $1.95 and the matching pencil for $1.25. Parkette Deluxe pens were available in burgundy, black, green and gray.

This Deluxe standard model 395 in green features a stainless steel nib with gold plating on the front and sold for $1.95 and the matching pencil for $1.25. Parkette Deluxe pens were available in burgundy, black, green and gray.

This is a Sheaffer Triumph Masterpiece c1946. The cap, barrel and clip are all 14 karat gold and hallmarked. Sheaffer featured the Lifetime point in their advertising. A previous owner tried to remove the personalization from the cap band, but it still shows, which is too bad because most of the time, they give the pen a story and are generally done quite well. These are difficult pens to find, especially without a lot of dings and scratches. Sheaffer offered the Triumph Masterpiece in 1946 for $120. The matching Masterpiece Stratowriter ballpoint was $81 and the Masterpiece pencil was $60. Sheaffer did offer them in three piece sets. We have never seen a Masterpiece Stratowriter ballpoint in photos or in person and would love to see one! That is a very hard pen to find! This is a Sheaffer Triumph Masterpiece c1946. The cap, barrel and clip are all 14 karat gold and hallmarked. Sheaffer featured the Lifetime point in their advertising. A previous owner tried to remove the personalization from the cap band, but it still shows, which is too bad because most of the time, they give the pen a story and are generally done quite well. These are difficult pens to find, especially without a lot of dings and scratches. Sheaffer offered the Triumph Masterpiece in 1946 for $120. The matching Masterpiece Stratowriter ballpoint was $81 and the Masterpiece pencil was $60. Sheaffer did offer them in three piece sets. We have never seen a Masterpiece Stratowriter ballpoint in photos or in person and would love to see one! That is a very hard pen to find!
